Collaboration with INNOVEC
Innovation in Science Education (INNOVEC) is a science education program that promotes the use of Experiential Education Systems and Investigative Science (SEVIC) among elementary school teachers who teach in public schools in Mexico.
SEVIC strengthens teaching practices through training and methodologies aimed at improving student learning, encouraging students to solve problems and develop effective communication skills and logical reasoning.
A SEVIC science class may include the handling of live organisms, insects and various chemicals, as well as activities designed for children to experience directly what it means to do science. The result is that learning is lasting and allows for the students to continue asking questions and finding answers on their own.
Various evaluations of these systems in countries such as France, Australia, Sweden, China and the United States have shown that programs like SEVIC favor teamwork and develop the critical thinking skills required in today's knowledge society.
FUMEC created INNOVEC in 2002 with the idea of improving the quality of education at the basic level and contributing to the development of new generations, prepared to understand current problems and propose new and creative solutions.
The main lines of action of NNOVEC are:
- Design, development and participation in assessment processes for SEVIC.
- Development of support materials for teaching science.
- Strengthening partnerships we well as national and international networks of support for inquiry-based science education.
- Organization and development of workshops and conferences on teaching inquiry-based science.
INNOVEC has taken the experiences of institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution Science Education Center and has based their curriculum, materials and assessment on the model used by the National Science Resources Center of the United States.
To advance the outreach work for SEVIC at the basic level, INNOVEC has gained support from the Secretary of Public Education, as well as state governments, universities and companies.
Since its creation, INNOVEC has trained over 30,000 teachers, benefiting nearly 400,000 students annually in various Mexican states.
