Cloud computing is the practice of providing or using computer programs and resources from the internet. In the term “cloud computing”, the word “cloud” functions as a metaphor for the internet.
Cloud computing is one of the main trends of computer applications because it allows increasing the number of services offered, creating benefits for both application providers and their consumers, and additionally it offers unique advantages such as immediacy and transparency of the services.
Since October 2009, FUMEC began promoting the migration of Mexican firms of information technology (IT) to cloud computing schemes and one of the most important allies in this task has been the Microsoft Corporation, the leader in the computer industry.
FUMEC-Microsoft collaboration in the area of cloud computing aims to ensure that Mexican Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the IT sector can benefit from the schemes in the cloud that allow them to be more competitive with larger companies without having to make large investments in infrastructure.
During 2008 and 2009, FUMEC worked jointly with TechBA Silicon Valley to know the market of cloud computing at the international level, which showed that there is a clear development opportunity for companies in this sector, being Latin American companies the ones that can benefit the most from migrating to cloud computing.
In addition, in 2009, FUMEC developed a study with the consultant firm SELECT to know better the Mexican market for Software as a Service (SaaS). As a result of this analysis, the Foundation and Microsoft conducted a pilot program for migrating companies in the North of the country, working with 45 companies in the states of Chihuahua, Sonora and Sinaloa, some of whom joined the Business Acceleration Program, TechBA at its offices in Arizona and Silicon Valley.
